Itasca State Park marks the headwaters and beginning of the world’s third longest river, The Mississippi, as a small stream. Established in 1891, Itasca State Park is Minnesota’s oldest State Park. In this 32,000 acre sanctuary, the Mississippi River begins its journey to the Gulf of Mexico. Among the many points of interest are old growth pine at Preacher’s Grove, Peace Pipe Vista, bison kill site and over 100 lakes. The park is a great birding site for Common Loon, Black-backed woodpecker, Alder Flycatcher, Winter Wren and more. Explore Wilderness Drive past the 2,000-acre Wilderness Sanctuary, one of Minnesota’s seven National Natural Landmarks.

Wildlife: The diversity of vegetation in the park supports many wildlife species. Birding is excellent and visitors are encouraged to help spot and record the bird life they see in the park. Some birds you can expect to see include loons, grebes, cormorants, herons, ducks, owls, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, chickadees, nuthatches, kinglets, vireos, tanagers, finches, and warblers. Trails in the park are shared with deer, chipmunks, and squirrels. Beaver, porcupine, black bears, and wolves also reside in the park.

Classic/Skate Ski trails include: Bike Trail from the Headwaters south to Douglas Lodge. South Entrance Road from the junction with the East Entrance south to Red Pine Trail access. Ozawindib from Douglas Lodge south to Red Pine Crossover. Wilderness Drive East from Mary Lake to Aiton Heights fire tower access road. Wilderness Drive West from Aiton Heights fire tower access road to DeSoto Trail.

Classic Trails include: Deer Park North from Douglas Lodge south to Myrtle Lake Crossover. Deer Park South from Myrtle Lake Crossover to McKay Lake Crossover. DeSoto from Wilderness Drive to McKay Lake Crossover Aiton Heights Trail from Ozawindib Trail to fire tower road. Myrtle Lake Crossover from Ozawindib Trail to Deer Park Trail. Snowshoe and Walking Trails: Snowshoe Trails include: Dr. Roberts Trail, Brower Trail, Schoolcraft Trail, self-guide trail by the visitor center, Twinkle Light Trail in Bear Paw Campground. Walking Trails include: Twinkle Light Trail in Bear Paw Campground and the main footpath to the Mississippi Headwaters. Be aware of slippery spots. Hikers and snowshoers are reminded to not walk on the groomed ski trails. You can snowshoe anywhere in Minnesota’s state parks and recreation areas, except on trails that are specifically groomed for another activity, such as skiing or snowmobiling.

Snowmobile Trails: 31 miles of snowmobile trails in the Itasca State Park that circle the park perimeter and connect with other trails that lead to Park Rapids, Walker, Bemidji, Bagley, Mahnomen and Detroit Lakes.

Twinkle Light Trail: Trail located in Bear Paw Campground. There is 3/4 mile of trails illuminated nightly from November 24 through the snow season. Lights are on from dusk to 10 p.m.

Other things to do in the park: Walk down to the Headwaters of the Mississippi River as the water flows year-round. Fresh snow is always a nice time for winter photography. Winter bird are here! Watch for Evening and Pine grosbeaks and Redpolls. Animal tracks are seen in the fresh snow, watch for red fox, deer, and weasels. Park lakes are frozen, but park users should use caution around any bodies of water, especially near the Mississippi Headwaters.

The trail(s): The trail offers a beautiful look of the mixed forests in northern Minnesota. Travel through wooded areas, around lakes and through one of the most popular parks in the state. Through out the trail, you may see a variety of wildlife, including deer, squirrels, fisher, wolves, fox and otter.

Facilities: The Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center is currently open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The lobby is open as a warming shelter after regular business hours. Winter Camping is available in Pine Ridge Campground and the backpack sites. Campers can register at the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center. For lodging: The Itasca Suites are available to rent year round; featuring seating area, kitchenette, bedroom, and bath. The Headwaters Inn is open for winter rental and features 6 individual rooms and a common area.

Park History: Some 8,000 years ago, Indian hunters pursued wild animals for food in the Itasca State Park region. These early people ambushed bison, deer, and moose at watering sites and killed them with stone-tipped spears. The Bison Kill Site along Wilderness Drive in the park gives visitors more history about this period. A few thousand years later, a group of people of the Woodland Period arrived at Lake Itasca. They lived in larger, more permanent settlements and made a variety of stone, wood, and bone tools. Burial mounds from this era can be seen today at the Itasca Indian Cemetery.

In 1832, Anishinabe guide Ozawindib, led explorer Henry Rowe Schoolcraft to the source of the Mississippi River at Lake Itasca. It was on this journey that Schoolcraft, with the help of an educated missionary companion, created the name Itasca from the Latin words for “truth” and “head” by linking adjoining syllables: verITAS CAput, meaning “true head.” In the late 1800s, Jacob V. Brower, historian, anthropologist and land surveyor, came to the park region to settle the dispute of the actual location of the Mississippi Headwaters. Brower saw this region being quickly transformed by logging, and was determined to protect some of the pine forests for future generations. It was Brower’s tireless efforts to save the remaining pine forest surrounding Lake Itasca that led the state legislature to establish Itasca as a Minnesota State Park on April 20, 1891, by a margin of only one vote. Through his conservation work and the continuing efforts of others throughout the decades, the splendor of Itasca had been maintained.

Geology: The landscape region in which the park is located was formed at the leading edge of repeating glacial advances. This northern pine moraine forms ranges of hills containing coarse, gravelly materials and boulders pock-marked with countless lakes, ponds and bogs. This terrain is sometimes referred to as “knob and kettle.” The knobs are mounds of debris deposited directly by the ice near the glacier’s edge or by melt-water streams flowing on or under the glacier surface. The kettles are depressions, usually filled with water, formed by stagnant ice masses buried or partially buried under glacial debris. The retreat of the ice left many lakes of varying size.

Landscape: At Itasca State Park, the mighty Mississippi River begins its 2,552-mile journey to the Gulf of Mexico. Established in 1891 to preserve remnant stands of virgin pine and to protect the basin around the Mississippi’s source, this park has become a famous natural and cultural landmark in North America.

White Earth State Forest is made up of 160,000 acres rolling hills and lakes with 4/5th being variegated forest and the rest being lowland brush and marsh. Almost all of this forest is within the boundaries of the White Earth Indian Reservation. The Shuttlebug Nature Trail is popular for summer hiking. It has 70 miles of marked and groomed snowmobile trails. Located about 20 miles north of Park Rapids on Hwy. 71, then west off Hwy. 113. The White Earth Indian Reservation, holds an annual Powwow; the first one was held in 1862.

Within the forest you will find both motorized and nonmotorized trails, a boat launch, primitive camping, a fishing pier, a historic site, a rest area, and WMAs to explore. White Earth State Forest has 65 miles of dual-purpose forest roads and 70 miles of snowmobile trails. Attention Trail Users: Note: White Earth tribal lands are always closed to non-band members.

White Earth Pow Wow & Celebration
The annual White Earth Pow Wow & Celebration is held on the second or third weekend of June each year at the White Earth Powwow Grounds in White Earth, Minnesota (be sure to check with tribal office to confirm date). Though the White Earth Pow Wow is a celebration of the White Earth Reservations’ people and heritage, everyone is invited. It’s an open event — not just for the native people, but for everyone. Around 1,000 dancers and over 25 drum groups can be expected. Nearly all of the state forest is within the boundaries of the White Earth Indian Reservation created in 1867 by a treaty between the United States and the Mississippi Band of Chippewa (Ojibwe). Native Americans people have inhabited the area since at least 1400, drawn to the place where the land grows food on the water, a reference to the plentiful wild rice that grows in the area.

Forest Landscape: White Earth State Forest is located at the western edge of Minnesota’s deciduous forest biome. Among the many rolling hills and lakes you’ll find Minnesota’s second-highest elevation along with Height of Land Road. The eastern part of the forest transitions into Minnesota’s coniferous forest biome. The Laurentian Divide bisects the forest—water north of the divide drains to Hudson Bay and water south of the divide drains to the Gulf of Mexico.

History: Between 1904 and 1918, the Nichols-Chisholm Lumber Company removed much of the old-growth timber from the area. Massive fires followed the intensive logging in 1918, leaving behind blackened stumps and fire-scarred pines. The Minnesota Legislature dedicated this forest in 1943 for purposes of reforestation, habitat, and recreation.

Huntersville State Forest features 16,448-acres of rolling-to-flat land, famed for its jack and Norway pine mixed with aspen, spruce, tamarack and northern hardwoods and clear streams. The major attraction is the beauty of two rivers that flow through the forest. These rivers, the Crow Wing River State Water Trail and the Shell River, cut through this forest providing many canoeing opportunities, with access ramps at the campgrounds as well as other put-in and take-out points along the river’s course through the forest. The excellent boating and canoeing route traverses 80 miles of river. There are two canoe outfitters in the area. Wilderness campsites are available at three-to seven-mile intervals. Located south of Park Rapids, off Hwy. 87 on CR 25. Huntersville is only a short distance from Itasca State Park and offers a great alternative to the more developed and heavily used state park.

Huntersville Forest Landing Campground: The campground is considered “primitive,” designed to furnish only the basic needs of the camper. The campsites consist of a cleared area, fire ring, and table. In addition, vault toilets, garbage cans, and drinking water are available. Highlights: Huntersville Forest Landing Campground is located by the Crow River and provides a great place to put in and take out along the river’s course through the forest. Hikers should find plenty of places to trek from the campground using the 150-plus miles of logging trails throughout the forest. Hikers and drivers also share these routes. All sites are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Shell City Horse Campground: The campground is considered “primitive,” designed to furnish only the basic needs of the camper. The campsites consist of a cleared area, fire ring, and table. In addition, vault toilets, garbage cans, and drinking water are available. Highlights: Shell City Horse Campground is located on a 24 miles of designated horse trail that includes two loops and a river crossing. A horse trail map is located on the state forest map. All sites are on a first-come, first-served basis for a fee.

Shell City Landing Campground: Highlights:Shell City Landing Campground is located on the Shell River joining Crow Wing River Water Trail. In addition, there is swimming, water access, and fishing. The campsites are considered “primitive,” designed to furnish only the basic needs of the camper. The campsites consist of a cleared area, fire ring, table, vault toilets, garbage cans, and drinking water. All sites are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Forest Landscape: This forest lies entirely within the coniferous forest biome. Topography contains a mix of glacial features such as hills and old outwash and till plains. Historically, fires occurred every 10 to 40 years, and today jack pine, quaking aspen, and paper birch dominate. Stands of red and white pine are also found in the forest.

History: The Dakota and Ojibwe people first occupied the Crow Wing River area. In the early 1700s French fur traders arrived and controlled the fur business. Between the 1870s and the early 1900s, logging was Wadena County’s chief economy. Timber taken from the dense forests along the Crow Wing River and its tributaries created jobs for hundreds of early settlers and provided an economic base for many towns in the area. Along the Shell River in the northern part of the Huntersville State Forest, Shell City was established in 1879 as a lumber camp. It was named for the river’s clams, which were used to make buttons in the city’s button factories. The Shell City Navigation Company headquarters, incorporated in 1884, was formed to operate steamboats and barges on the Shell and Crow Wing rivers from Shell City to the Mississippi River. Shell City was eventually abandoned and the region’s economy came to depend on agriculture. Today, recreationists still use the roads created by the early loggers.

Huntersville OHM Trail: Fifty-nine miles of OHM trail twists through Huntersville State Forest. Much of the trail is single-track, with some two-track and service road loops for beginning riders. All trails are marked and range from easy to more difficult. The Huntersville Trail is a great alternative to the more technical Martineau Recreational Trail. Maplewood State Park features eight major lakes and many ponds offering swimming, fishing, boating, and general enjoyment. Drive along the scenic route to observe the wildlife; the park is host to 150 bird species and 50 species of mammals. Lake Lida has a sandy beach and large picnic areas for visitors. Wildflower lovers will find flowers and grasses representative of both the prairies and forests. Spring through fall, the park is “dressed” with displays of trillium, hepatica, bloodroot, yellow lady’s slipper, wild onion, prairie rose, and showy milkweed. The park’s maple forest turns brilliant shades of orange, gold, and red in the fall. Wildlife: The park drive at dawn and dusk is a great time to see deer. Beaver are active in some lakes and racoons, squirrels, rabbits, and chipmunks can be seen frequently. As a result of the varied landscape in the park, 150 bird species breed here, along with 50 species of mammals, and 25 kinds of reptiles and amphibians. The park also hosts sites for colonial nesting birds. Butterflies, dragonflies, kingbirds, swallows, cuckoos, cerulean warblers, and blue-gray gnatcatchers can be seen in the park.

Landscape: Amid the farmlands that surround the park, Maplewood sits on a series of high tree-covered hills that provide visitors with striking vistas of small, clear lakes nestled in deep valleys. The park is located in a transition area between the western prairies and the eastern forests and contains plants and animals found in both landscapes. The park is known for its hardwood trees including sugar maple, basswood, and oak. These same trees provide a stunning display of fall colors each year. In addition, red cedar and tamarack are found in the park.

Geology: Maplewood lies on a series of hills in the Leaf Hills Landscape Region near the eastern edge of the level Red River Valley. These hills, part of the Alexandria Glacial Moraine, were deposited during the last ice age. Relief is abrupt, with changes of about 300 feet in less than a mile. The highest hills in the park approach 1,600 feet. The Lake Lida basin was probably formed when the last glacier retreated 20,000 years ago and left ice stranded in the valley. The ice melted, exposing the basin and allowed the present lake to form.

Hike up Hallaway Hill for impressive overlooks that are not to be missed. Find the start of this 1/2 mile, one-way hike at the picnic area. ? Take a scenic 5-mile drive through the park. History: Human habitation in the area dates back at least 6,000 years. Artifacts found in the park give evidence of both prairie and woodland cultures. Most artifacts, however, indicate that the site was occupied 900 to 1200 years ago and that the residents were primarily hunters during that period. Records of modern habitation began in the mid-1880s when the original land surveys occurred. After the organization of the Lida and Maplewood townships, the area population rose to 1,167 by 1900. The idea of establishing a park in the area goes back to 1923 when it was originally proposed at the legislature. A later study concluded that this hilly, lake-dotted terrain was better suited to recreation than to farming. In 1963 the park became a reality when Maplewood State Park was established by the Minnesota Legislature.

Detroit Lakes, Becker County, and the surrounding area offers so many recreational and outdoor activities that it is difficult to fit them into one visit. With over 400 lakes within a 25-mile radius, and with beautiful rivers and streams (not to mention the Mississippi Headwaters), many parks and trails have been created to provide public access.

Parks, such as the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, provide cross-country and snow mobiling trails in the winter– and even more trails for hiking and biking during the spring, summer and fall months. You can also enjoy the natural beauty from your car. The Lake Country Scenic Byway is an 88-mile corridor that follows Highways 34 and 71. Along its route, the Byway uniquely spans three different types of geographic terrain.

Two Inlets State Forest offers over 26,000 acres set in a landscape that’s gently rolling to hilly, with scattered lowlands. Two Inlets Trail provides over 27 miles of snowmobile trail that connects to other area trails. Two Inlets Lake provides good fishing. This state forest is known for excellent hunting of deer, ruffed grouse and small game. Indian Creek Water Impoundment provides habitat for waterfowl. Two Inlets State Forest is located about 10 miles north of Park Rapids in Becker County. Access is from the village of Two Inlets, one mile west on Becker County Highway 46 to Becker County Highway 135 and then south through the forest.

Hungryman Lake (Lake Day Use Area and Campground)
Located in Two Inlets State Forest, managed by Itasca State Park. Hungryman Lake is located in eastern Becker County, two miles northeast of the town of Two Inlets. Hungryman has a surface area of 139 acres and is a very shallow lake with a maximum depth of only 21 feet. Hungryman Lake lies entirely within the Two Inlets State Forest. There is a State Forest campground and public access located on the south shore. When fishing, anglers can expect to catch a variety of fish including Black Bullhead, Bluegill, Brown Bullhead, Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, Walleye, Yellow Perch, and Pumkinseed. The 14 campsites sit on a pine covered rise above Hungryman Lake are considered “primitive,” designed to furnish only the basic needs of the camper. In addition, vault toilets, garbage cans and drinking water are available. The campsites consist of a cleared area, fire ring, and table. Campsites Boat access are provided on Hungryman Lake. The Day-Use Area includes two picnic tables.

Fish Hungryman Lake
Present and past surveys have shown Hungryman to have an abundant northern pike population. Anglers will find that northern pike tend to run small as average length and weight was only 20.9 inches and 1.8 pounds. Northern pike up to 28.3 inches were sampled. Hungryman has an abundant panfish population composed of black crappie, bluegill, and pumpkinseed. Anglers will find black crappie in the 8-10 inch with a few larger sized fish. Black crappie growth rates were slow when compared to other area lakes. Anglers will find good numbers of bluegill and pumpkinseed in the 6-8 inch size range. Hungryman can support a “boom and bust” largemouth bass population depending on the frequency and severity of winterkills. Forest Landscape: Due to the molding of the last glaciers, the landscape is gently rolling to hilly with scattered lowlands. The soils vary from loamy sand to better sand and are ideal for forestry. Much of the forest was once farmed, but most of the land was eventually abandoned because the soils were not productive.

History: State lands in Two Inlets Township were a part of Smoky Hills State Forest until June 1963, when 9,284 acres of tax-forfeited land was acquired. At the time legislation was introduced to change Township 141-36 and parts of 142-35 and 141-37 into Two Inlets State Forest.

Management Activities: Minnesota state forests were established to produce timber and other forest crops, provide outdoor recreation, protect watersheds, and perpetuate rare and distinctive species of native flora and fauna. Management activities in Two Inlets State Forest include timber harvesting, reforestation, wildlife habitat improvement, and recreational development. About 75 acres are planted each year to regenerate tracts of pine that have been harvested. In addition, approximately 75 acres of pine stands are thinned each year. Thinning is a commercial harvest technique that reduces overcrowding by removing trees with poor form or disease.

43,000-acre Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge hosts more than 250 species of birds and is a premier production site for trumpeter swans. The refuge features nesting bald eagles, golden-winged warblers, otters, porcupine, wolves and more. A wildlife drive and visitor center offer spectacular vistas of marshes, trees and wildlife in the refuge. Enjoy hiking trails, historic sites, hunting and fishing. The refuge is in a transition zone where tallgrass prairie, hardwood and pine forests converge, making it a haven for an abundance of wildlife. Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge offers several miles of hiking trails. On the 2.4 mile Old Indian Hiking Trail loop (accessed from County Hwy 29) you’ll follow in the footsteps of the Ojibwe people and experience the beauty of the maple basswood forest. You can even hike a portion of the 4600 mile North Country National Scenic Trail as it traverses the refuge through a variety of habitats (ccess on 400th Ave., Blackbird Wildlife Drive or Pine Lake Parking Area on County Hwy 29).

40 mammals make their home at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, including Timber wolves, white-tailed deer, black bear, fisher, river otter and moose. Bird migration in spring and fall is spectacular, including: common loon, trumpeter swan, wood duck, bald eagle, ruffed grouse, pileated woodpecker, scarlet tanager, rose-breasted grosbeak, indigo bunting and 28 species of warblers are just a few of the 250+ bird species that can be seen on the refuge. Be sure to attend the Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds and enjoy a guided birding tour of Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge as part of the activities.

• Snowmobiles & ATV’s are NOT allowed on the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge.

Eastern forest dramatically gives way to the western prairie at Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuge. Hardwood forests stretching from the Atlantic seaboard rapidly shift to the vast western prairie at this picturesque refuge. Prior to settlement, this diverse vegetation was attractive to wildlife, and the area teemed with waterfowl, upland birds, bison, wolves, and other prairie wildlife. When fully restored, the refuge will provide the largest contiguous block of wetland prairie habitat in the region, encompassing nearly 6,000 acres. This will provide resting and nesting cover for 219 species of migratory and nesting birds. Currently, many species of waterfowl, shorebirds, neotropical migratory songbirds, and birds of prey rely on the shallow water and prairie habitat that has been restored on the refuge. The refuge kiosk is located in the west central portion of Minnesota in Becker County on 210th Street, about 1.5 miles northeast of Audubon, Minnesota. Visitors can get to the information kiosk by following the brown and white refuge signs on state, county, and township roads. It is managed by the Detroit Lakes Wetland Management District office which is located 2 miles north of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, via Hwy 59 North, then 1 mile east on CR 131, at 26624 North Tower Road.

Points of Interest
State, county, and township roads provide access to much of the refuge. A prairie chicken viewing blind is available from mid-March thru April. Observers can see the spectacular mating ritual of the Greater Prairie Chicken. Excellent wildlife viewing is available at Bisson Lake, during May and June. Shorebird and prairie songbird numbers peak from middle-to-late May. The Hesby Memorial Overlook with walkway and observation deck is located on the east side of Hesby Wetland. The refuge is listed on Minnesota’s first birding trail “Pine to Prairie Birding Trail”. The trail is over 200 miles in length with 45 sites to view birds.

Know Before You Go
When planning a trip to the Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuge, it is important to wear appropriate footwear for land excursions and to dress for the weather. Consider bringing water, food, binoculars, field guides, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and anything else that might make the outdoor experience more enjoyable.

Visitor Activities
The Refuge’s wetlands and prairies provide resting, nesting, and feeding habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife. Prairie habitat restorations increase plant diversity that attracts additional insects, which deposit eggs and larva, providing a rich protein source for spring chicks and ducklings.

Hunting in Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuge
Hunting opportunities on Hamden Slough are relatively new. The refuge is open each fall for the State-set youth waterfowl hunt. The one-day hunt is allowed on roughly 60% of the refuge, maintaining 40% of the refuge as a sanctuary for waterfowl. In addition, the US Fish & Wildlife Service together with Ducks Unlimited and Minnesota Department Natural Resources sponsor a mentored youth hunt geared towards kids new to hunting. Deer muzzleloader hunting is offered on the refuge during the State-set season on all fee refuge land. This hunting option allows for a quality deer hunt after waterfowl migration, thus limiting any disturbance. Rules and Regulations can be found at the attached link.

Wildlife Viewing
Wildlife viewing, especially birding, is a favorite pastime at Hamden Slough NWR. Many roadways intersect the refuge and allow for easy viewing of the refuge’s natural resources. Favorites include the county road along the Big 6 wetlands and Highway 14 bisecting Bisson Lake. Both roadsides offer easy pull-off access and great views of refuge waters and wildlife. Booming prairie chickens in spring are a popular draw to Hamden Slough. Each year, biologists place a blind near the lek for people to observe the breeding spectacle up close. Sucker Creek Preserve is a 64 Acre parcel of NW Minnesota hardwood forest. Visitors of all ages are offered a self-guided environmental learning experience. Topography includes swamp, designated trout stream, woods and prairie. Handicapped accessible path leads 1/3 mile through woods and newly seeded prairie to 110-seat amphitheater. Designated trout stream, Sucker Creek, marks south preserve boundary. Outdoor activities include: Hiking Trails, Cross Country Ski Trails, Scenic Byways, Birding & Wildlife Viewing. Free and open to public as the City of Detroit Lakes’ newest park. Conserved for all persons: children, youth, students, adults, and groups of all ages, find a perfect learning lab for the natural world.

Sucker Creek Preserve was acquired by the City of Detroit Lakes in August 2001, conserves 64.24 acres of a remnant of Minnesota’s original post-glacial maple-basswood forest for future generations. Visitors of all ages are offered a self-guided environmental learning experience. Topography includes swamp, designated trout stream, woods and prairie.

A circular parking lot welcomes you. A small prairie cul-de-sac hosts a hillside amphitheater allowing visitors a meadow-like view while learning about the Preserve. Unimproved north and south perimeter paths add adventure for the trekker (Handicapped Accessible).

In addition to Sucker Creek Preserve, a 53-acre Upstream Sucker Creek has opened (the entrance is located 0.30 miles down the road on the opposite side of the street) to provide a total of 117 acres of native grasses, plants, trees and wildlife.

Dunton Locks County Park is a 53-acre park located on the shores of Muskrat Lake and Lake Sallie 3 miles south of Detroit Lakes on Highway 59 and 6, next to the DNR Fish Hatchery. The park is accessible by bicycle, roller blades, or on foot by using the Fish Hatchery Recreation Trail located on West Shore Drive near the Pelican River. This quiet, year-around park features two picnic shelters, hiking and mountain biking trails which double as cross-country ski trails in the winter, a paved recreation trail, interpretive history signs, two fishing piers, and a mechanical boat tram that transports boats, PWC, and pontoons between Muskrat Lake and Lake Sallie, allowing boat travel from Detroit Lakes to Shoreham.

Covered Picnic Facilities for Groups
Picnics are a frequent sight at Dunton Locks County Park which offers facilities to accommodate almost any size group. The VFW Shelter, located near the shore of Muskrat Lake, offers modern restrooms and a modern kitchen complete with stove, refridgerator, sink, indoor charcoal grill with exhaust hood, a food service area, and electrical outlets. The shelter provide covered seating for 48 people plus outside seating for an additional 12. The Eagles Shelter, located on the hill overlooking the park area, has electrical outlets, an indoor charcoal/wood fire grill, and covered seating for 48. Both of these shelters can be reserved for family reunions, weddings, meetings, or business/organizational gatherings calling 218-846-2612.

Hiking, Mountain Biking & Cross Country Ski Trails
For the nature lover, Dunton Locks has 6.1 km of hiking, mountain biking and cross country ski trails located on the hills above the Eagles Picnic Shelter and along the shores between Lake Sallie and Muskrat Lake, south of the bridge. The northern trails wind through hardwood forested hills once a gathering spot for the Sioux Indians. Remnants of Indian burial mounds are still present throughout the park. In fact, much of the park area was a gathering area for netting tulabies, camping, and trading. The southern trails also wind through rolling, wooded terrain, however much of the trails are located on private land owned by the Soo Pass Ranch. Connecting the Waters
Be sure to visit the mechanical boat tram located just south of the bridge. Years ago, when the Detroit Lakes area was first being settled, the Detroit Lakes and Pelican River Slack Water Navigation Company installed a series of locks and dams to accommodate steamship traffic from Breckenridge to Detroit Lakes, thus the name Dunton Locks. While the plan was cut short, it did inspire a group of local entrepreneurs in the mid 1970s to try to duplicate the effort, only on a much smaller scale. This group designed, built, and maintained a mechanical boat tram to promote dinner excursions between Shoreham and Detroit Lakes. Becker County now operates the tram as a local tourist attraction.

Detroit Lakes, Becker County, and the surrounding area offers so many recreational and outdoor activities that it is difficult to fit them into one visit. With over 400 lakes within a 25-mile radius, and with beautiful rivers and streams (not to mention the Mississippi Headwaters), many parks and trails have been created to provide public access.

Parks, such as the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, provide cross-country and snow mobiling trails in the winter– and even more trails for hiking and biking during the spring, summer and fall months. You can also enjoy the natural beauty from your car. The Lake Country Scenic Byway is an 88-mile corridor that follows Highways 34 and 71. Along its route, the Byway uniquely spans three different types of geographic terrain.
