The Minnesota’s newest ski destination is Detroit Mountain Recreation Area near Detroit Lakes. Complete with a main lodge and tubing park lodge and 15 runs for alpine skiing and snowboarding, it represents the growing popularity of ‘tubing’ with designated runs for that purpose. Large windows throughout the main lodge provide a breathtaking view of the ski runs. The main lodge has 9,700 sf that house a grand hall, skier’s lounge and ski school, equipment sales, repair and rental spaces. A bar and kitchen (along with various seating areas) provide space to take a break from skiing and/or tubing on the mountain.

Located just minutes from Detroit Lakes, MN, Detroit Mountain Recreation Area offers an explorable terrain with 45 skiable acres, 21 runs, 2 terrain parks, 2 chairlifts, 2 high-speed rope tows, and 2 magic carpet lifts. Detroit Mountain is kid-friendly, catering to first timers (of any age), with a designated learning area featuring Terrain Based Learning.

The Landslide Tubing Park, a recent addition at Detroit Mountain, has its own 2500 sf lodge siting astride the tubing hill. It also offers one of the two Magic Carpet lifts. This tubing hill lodge features a cafe with a variety of food options and the Ace’s Wild Bar that is perfect for indoor Apres Ski socializing (outdoors a large fire pit warms you while you gather with friends). Also offered: ticketing, concessions, a dining area with a view of the tubing hill, and two private party rooms on either side of the dining area. It is warmed with forced-air propane heat to keep you comfortable in the coldest of weather.

Nordic and snowshoes trails at Detroit Mountain take you on a winding tour through their wooded 200 acres. There are approximately 7km of machine groomed skate and classic trails with connectors to additional groomed trails at Mountain View Recreation Area and off-piste trails at the Detroit Mountain WPA US Fish & Wildlife Waterfowl Production Area.

Snowshoes trails follow a separate network of trails used for mountain biking and also have the ability to connect to adjacent trail systems at Mountain View Recreation Area and Leitheiser Lake area.

Your Detroit Mountain alpine season pass includes the use of the Nordic and snowshoe trails.

Detroit Lakes winter fun begins at The Lodge. At 1500 feet, nearby Detroit Mountain Recreation Area offers an explorable terrain with 45 skiable acres, 21 runs, 2 terrain parks, 2 chairlifts, 2 high-speed rope tows, and 2 magic carpet lifts. Snowmobile more than 200 miles of groomed trails in the Detroit Lakes area. Over 50 miles of cross country ski trails are available on public and private property. 2024 CP Holiday Train Comes to Detroit Lakes

The Canadian Pacific (CP) Holiday Train returns to Detroit Lakes, MN on December 15, 2024, arriving at about 2:45 pm. Alana Springsteen and Seaforth will perform your holiday favorites from the box car until 3:15 pm between Holmes and State Streets.

The CP Holiday Train travels across the US and Canada spreading holiday cheer and raising monetary and food support for food banks. Please bring a non-perishable food or monetary donation for the Becker County Food Pantry.

Holiday Train shows are free to attend. CP asks attendees to bring a cash or non-perishable food donation if they’re able. Local food shelves will set up collection stations at each event, with all donations made staying with the local food bank to help people in need in the community. Because local food shelves buy food at a discount, cash donations can go further than food donations to help those in need.

“Food banks and communities across Canada are so excited to see the CP Holiday Train return, as it brings together the City of Calgary to kick off the holidays and give back at the same time,” said Calgary Food Bank President and CEO James McAra. “The Calgary Food Bank is so grateful for CP’s continued support to help us build a Canada where no one goes hungry.”

Since the Holiday Train program launched in 1999, it’s raised more than $21 million and collected 5 million pounds of food for community food banks across North America.

“This year, more than ever, the support, awareness and goodwill that the CP Holiday Train brings will make an impact beyond imagination to the food support programs of East Side Neighborhood Services,” said Mary Anstett, Vice President, Community Engagement for East Side Neighborhood Services in Minneapolis. “With the support that Holiday Train brings in, we can rest assured that so many will have warm nutritious food on their tables in the coldest months.”

2025 Detroit Lakes Art in the Park

Don’t miss Art in the Park in City Park next to the City Beach in beautiful Detroit Lakes, Minnesota on Sunday, July 27, 2025. It’s not your typical Art in the Park, but at Detroit Lakes it’s a perfect blend. Since 1979, booths with homemade crafts and artwork, festival food and live music are set up under the shady trees in the park. You’ll find treasures of all sorts – from jewelry and pottery to furniture and fabric goods. Admission is free, so bring the entire family!

If you have handcrafted items you’d like to add to the fun array of booths, watch for the artist application form. For questions, call 218.847.9202.

Absorb the smell – the sweet mingle of water, woods and food. Rest with your treasures at a picnic table in the shade and enjoy lunch from Oof da Tacos, ice cream and Kettle Korn. Let the kids play on the swings in the nearby City Park.

2024 Hawley Rodeo ~ Hawley Minnesota

Don’t miss the excitement of the 2024 Hawley Rodeo on June 7-8, 2024 in Hawley, Minnesota, about 30 minutes from Detroit Lakes, MN or Fargo, ND. Dating back to 1960 the Hawley Rodeo is an annual event. The small town of Hawley, Minnesota rolls out the western hospitality annually and celebrates the community and ProRodeo contestants. Located off Hwy 10 and a short drive from I94 and the Fargo area. The hillside rodeo arena is picturesque, nestled among the northern pines and along the Buffalo River. Local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and FFA members will welcome you to the rodeo and make sure you have plenty of food options.

The excitement and energy of our Barnes PRCA Rodeo during the annual community celebration is great family entertainment. Rodeo fans experience America’s original sport at its best. Rodeo is one of the fastest growing spectator sports in the country. The popularity of the sport has as strong sense of tradition and value. Patriotism is at the core of Barnes PRCA Rodeo productions. The Iowa-based stock contracting company is known for paying respect to the United States Armed Forces during their rodeo performances. American flags flown over the bucking chutes and during the grand entry are signature elements at Barnes PRCA Rodeos across the country.

The small town of Hawley, Minnesota roles out the hospitality and western celebration annually. Enjoy the permanent rodeo grounds and sit on the hillside, bring a lawn chair and tell your friends to join you up in northern Minnesota. The local FFA Chapter serves burgers, Boy Scouts sell popcorn and Girl Scouts help with rodeo program sales as they welcome rodeo fans nightly at the gate. This is a great community fundraiser and get-together just off Highway 10.

2025 Street Faire at the Lakes

Street Faire at the Lakes in beautiful downtown Detroit Lakes, Minnesota on May 30-31, 2025. One hundred and twenty-five juried artists set up their paintings, sculptures, pottery, jewelry and other first-class art. Musicians stroll the sidewalks. Bands perform from a main stage, free to attendees. During the Faire, Detroit Lakes cordons off the downtown for the first, big outdoor event of the season.

There’s something for everyone at Street Faire at the Lakes. Your children will love the balloons, having their faces painted and riding on the carnival rides. You can mellow out with classic folk music or soothing Bluegrass. Or, put on your dancing shoes at the Eagles on Friday night. One hundred and twenty-five juried artists will set up their paintings, sculptures, pottery, jewelry and other first class art. Musicians stroll the sidewalks. Bands perform from a main stage, free to attendees. Come hungry (or not, you won’t be able to help yourself) as you will find yourself pulled toward the food court by its wondrous smells. It’s summer time and the Street Faire is the perfect way to begin the season.

The Street Faire at the Lakes began in 2001 when a group of downtown-loving Detroit Lakes natives came together and dreamt up the idea of having a downtown outdoor art fair. As these things go, rumblings about what the duo was dreaming up got around town and people became intrigued and enthused so they put together a committee. While committees have a reputation for creating horses with two heads, in this case we landed one of the best committees that has ever existed! These amazing folk came together, learned from each other, challenged each other and created the Street Faire at the Lakes! If you’d like to get involved, contact us.

2025 Dick Beardsley Marathon in Detroit Lakes

Make your plans to participate or watch the 2025 Dick Beardsley Marathon on September 6, 2025 which begins at the Detroit Lakes Pavillion on Washington Avenue in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Slip on your running shoes for the Dick Beardsley Half Marathon, 25k, 10k, 5k, and Youth 1 mile runs. Most races treat you to scenic views of Detroit Lake with cheering fans to keep you moving along. Plus, the LEGENDARY Dick Beardsley comes home every September to welcome runners from around the country to run in this fall classic!
