Collective Unconscious

Formed in the spring of the year 2000 to support lead singer/bass player Jeff Engholm’s first solo CD (Summit Climb), CU performed around central Minnesota as a jam band. A couple of years of Wednesday nights at the Red Carpet Nightclub in St. Cloud, MN firmly established the band’s repertoire, and musicianship, and kept audiences dancing.

During that time they recorded and released a couple of albums of their original material: Collective Unconscious, and The Garden.

A few years later they began performing the Beatles Abbey Road album in its entirety, from Come Together all the way through Her Majesty (years before tribute bands were a thing). From there they expanded on to Simon & Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water album (with strings and brass), CSNY’s Deja Vu album, The Band’s The Last Waltz (with a cavalcade of guest performers), and the epically grand album from The Beach Boys Pet Sounds (with a multitude of multi-instrumentalists playing over 30 different instruments).

Eventually, CU joined up with powerhouse The Fabulous Armadillos to perform a show called Takin’ It To The Limit: An Eagles Tribute, which has been entertaining sold-out houses across the midwest ever since.

About Dr. Erika Izaguirre:
Dr. Erika Izaguirre is the Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Director of the Jazz Ensemble at Concordia College. Erika leads an active career as a solo performer, teacher, and clinician. As an international soloist, she maintains a dynamic schedule recently coming off of a tour performing throughout Spain. Erika has commissioned and premiered works in Minnesota, New York, and abroad by composers John Wallace, Jorge Bennett, Dr. Daniel Breedon, and Sean William Calhoun. Recently, she was involved in three consortiums; a solo piece for trumpet and electronics by Dr. Whitney George, an unaccompanied work by Dr. Roy Magnusson to bring awareness to gun violence, and a trumpet sonata by the up-and-coming composer, Marcus Grant. She earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music. Currently, Erika is focused on helping young musicians and composers from underrepresented communities by elevating their voices and providing resources.

Featuring Stephen Sulich as a collaborating artist:
Stephen Sulich is Artist-in-Residence at Concordia College – Hvidsten Hall of Music. He serves as a collaborative pianist for faculty and students, a musical coach, and music preparation for lyric opera studio. He has been a guest conductor, coach, collaborative pianist, and chorus master with the Fargo-Moorhead Opera and guest artist/coach with the music departments at MSUM and NDSU. He graduated from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University and has conducted at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Anchorage Opera, and the Amalfi Coast Music Festival.

Terrance Simien has become one of the most respected and accomplished artists in American roots music today. He and his band mates have performed nearly 10,000 concerts, toured millions of miles to over 45 countries during their eventful career. Their music has been placed in multiple major studio theatre release films, including a Disney animated film, TV shows and radio commercials. They’ve shared studio and stage with legends the Meters, Art Neville, Los Lobos, Marcia Ball, the late Robert Palmer and Dave Matthews Band to name a few. They’ve been cultural ambassadors for their country since the mid 1980’s as part of the U.S,. State Department ongoing cultural diplomacy tours. They performed in Ukraine twice (2012, 2015) with the U.S. Embassy in Kiev and toured Russia for two weeks as well in 2015.

At its deepest roots, zydeco music was traditional and performed acoustic with an accordion, fiddle and triangle and sung in French. The older generation simply called it French music. Before that, it was call and response, jure´songs* of the 19th century using only clapping hands, stomping feet and the yearning, often painful voices of the oppressed French speaking blacks unique to Louisiana. Although jure´ was still being performed in rural Louisiana into the 20th century. One must understand how remote and isolated parts of the rural Deep South were to understand they were often decades behind other parts of the country. When Terrance was just a kid, in the late 60’s he remembers horse and buggies being used as actual means of transportation in rural St. Landry Parish. The Creoles sang their songs through good times and bad, through slavery, Jim Crow and all the way up to the victorious time in 1982 when our friend and Queen Ida Guillory, now 95 won the first Grammy award for zydeco!

Zydeco is driven by African and Caribbean rhythms and has evolved musically over decades incorporating more popular genres like rock, funk, R&B and into the 21st century, incorporated rap and hip hop. Zydeco became wildly popular all over the world when it began to diversify from mostly trad French songs to contemporary sounding music that traveled more easily outside of the French speaking Creole community of Louisiana. During the 20th century Blues, jazz and folk audiences embraced the music and Terrance et al were at the forefront as the emerging face of the music, even performing in notable rock rooms in the US and Canada in the early-mid 80’s.

About Little Texas

Little Texas was founded in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1988. Prior to the band’s formation, Tim Rushlow and Dwayne O’Brien began playing together in Arlington, Texas, in 1984. Porter Howell and Duane Propes got together while they were in high school in 1983 and moved to Nashville to attend Belmont University. Brady Seals and Del Gray played in the backup band of country music singer Josh Logan. Rushlow, O’Brien, Propes, and Howell first started making music at Opryland as a 1950s show band. With both Rushlow’s first wife and Howell’s wife, plus two other members, they took the show band on the road, naming their act “The Varsities”.

When two of the members left to pursue other interests, they contacted their old friends Gray and Seals, whom they had met while playing in Springfield, Massachusetts, in hopes of forging a more country/Southern rock sound. All six members eventually moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where they started playing together. The band played at venues across the United States (around 300 dates a year), eventually catching the attention of Nashville’s division of Warner Bros. Records.

Hiatus and status of former members
During the band’s hiatus, Del Gray co-wrote Trace Adkins’ 2000 single “More”. Former frontman Tim Rushlow signed to Atlantic Records as a solo artist that same year, releasing a self-titled album. Although it accounted for four singles, including the No. 8 “She Misses Him”, Atlantic closed its country music division in 2001. Rushlow then founded a second band, Rushlow, whose members included his cousin Doni Harris. Rushlow released two singles and one album (Right Now) on Lyric Street Records, but disbanded by 2004. Seals founded the band Hot Apple Pie, which released a self-titled album and three singles in 2005, while Rushlow and Harris founded the duo Rushlow Harris a year later. In addition, Howell recorded one album in the band Hilljack, which also included former solo artist Paul Jefferson.

Reunion: Duane Propes, Del Gray, Porter Howell, and Dwayne O’Brien decided to reunite Little Texas in 2004. When Little Texas reunited, Rushlow and Huskins made a legal attempt to keep their ex-bandmates from using the Little Texas name. As the other four members felt uncomfortable singing lead vocals in Rushlow’s and Seals’s absence, they recruited Steven Troy as new lead vocalist. However, O’Brien was critical of Troy’s performance as lead singer, stating that it “just didn’t feel authentic”; as a result, he exited the band in 2006. By the time the band had signed to Montage Music Group in 2007, producers for the label had suggested that Howell take over on lead vocals instead. Their first Montage Music release was the live album The Very Best of Little Texas: Live and Loud. They promoted this album on the Triple Threat Tour that year, which included both Restless Heart and Blackhawk; touring guitarist Mark Sutton accompanied the band on both the tour and the live album. This was followed one month later by the studio album Missing Years. This album produced three singles, although only one — the title track — made the country charts, peaking at No. 45. Another studio album with Howell on lead vocals, Young for a Long Time, followed in 2015.

2004-present: Little Texas has continued to tour constantly averaging 65 shows a year. In 2022, they are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the release of their debut album, First Time For Everything.

Students of Detroit Lakes Summit Dance School perform a variation of the beloved story of The Nutcracker. Blending traditional music and characters with creative and surprising dance numbers, this Twist on The Nutcracker will be a joyful event to tie a ribbon on your holiday season!
