Don’t miss the 2025 Tamarac Youth Ice Fishing Day on January 121, 2025 at Long Bridge in Detroit Lakes, MN 56501. Don’t know how to ice fish? Don’t miss this opportunity get the scoop on ice fishing. This youth mentoring ice fishing day is a wonderful chance to learn how to ice fish. We’ll drill the holes, provide a warming shelter, and tips on winter fishing.

Volunteer mentors can handle up to 20 kids per hour so sign up for 1:00, 2:00 or 3:00 pm arrival time by choosing the ticketed time. Kids that are signed up will get to keep the ice fishing kit complete with pole, scoop, lead free tackle, bucket and more provided by the Friends of Tamarac. This experience is geared for youth 6-16 but the whole family can tag along. Park at Long Bridge Bar, Grill & Marina and step inside to check in.

Be sure to dress warm!

Boots, snow pants, mittens, hat, scarf. Some folks even bring a blanket for those times when we sit and watch for a fish to bite. We’ll spend about an hour on the ice. You are welcome to stay longer and keep fishing. We’ll be targeting sunfish, but sometimes we get bass, perch, northern pike or walleye.

About Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge

Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge was established by Congress in 1938, and lies in the heart of one of the most diverse transition zones in North America. Here eastern deciduous hardwoods, northern coniferous forests and western tallgrass prairie converge – creating a rich assemblage of both plants and animals.  Though the landscape has been altered by the influences of human history and past management, the refuge remains largely intact with a functioning ecosystem and retains an untamed character for current visitors to enjoy, use and respect. From the vibrant emergence of spring woodland wildflowers to the rich colors of autumn to the quiet hush of winter, people come to revitalize their spirit and connect with a rich wildlife heritage.

The refuge is home to a large population of nesting trumpeter swans. Habitat conservation efforts address species such as the nearly threatened golden-winged warbler, woodcock, and ring-necked ducks. Established nearly 30 years ago this nonprofit group is made up of an active 10-15 member board and over 300 members. The Friends sponsor educational programs and events, build observation platforms and pathways, generate thousands of grant dollars for water quality and habitat projects, host a popular nature photography contest, and so much more.
