About the Talent:

Collective Unconscious

Formed in the spring of the year 2000 to support lead singer/bass player Jeff Engholm’s first solo CD (Summit Climb), CU performed around central Minnesota as a jam band. A couple of years of Wednesday nights at the Red Carpet Nightclub in St. Cloud, MN firmly established the band’s repertoire, and musicianship, and kept audiences dancing.

During that time they recorded and released a couple of albums of their original material: Collective Unconscious, and The Garden.

A few years later they began performing the Beatles Abbey Road album in its entirety, from Come Together all the way through Her Majesty (years before tribute bands were a thing). From there they expanded on to Simon & Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water album (with strings and brass), CSNY’s Deja Vu album, The Band’s The Last Waltz (with a cavalcade of guest performers), and the epically grand album from The Beach Boys Pet Sounds (with a multitude of multi-instrumentalists playing over 30 different instruments).

Eventually, CU joined up with powerhouse The Fabulous Armadillos to perform a show called Takin’ It To The Limit: An Eagles Tribute, which has been entertaining sold-out houses across the midwest ever since.

• Game play is 4-on-4 with a maximum of eight-person teams (no goalies).
• Rinks measure approx. 70′ x 140′ with 18” boards.Goals are six feet wide with 12″ openings on each side.
• In true pond fashion, the ice is to be shoveled by the two opposing teams before the game starts.
• Games consist of two 15-minute halves with a two-minute break.

About Detroit Lakes Polar Fest

Detroit Lakes Polar Fest is is a 17-day winter festival that features a multitude of outdoor winter activities. It is held in early and mid-February with the plunge and fireworks on the last Saturday night of Polar Fest. Polar Fest was started in 1996 by Erika Johnson, previous owner of Lakeside Tavern. She loved winter and wanted to see some sort of celebration of winter by the lake and outside her restaurant. Coincidentally, Ron Zeman, former Develop DL board member, heard of people jumping into a hole in the lake to raise money for an organization. He took that idea to the Boys & Girls Club and the “Polar Fest Plunge” was born. Unfortunately, in 2002 a lack of support left Polar Fest with only its key event, the Polar Plunge.

In 2005, a group of crazy, winter-loving citizens came together to reinvigorate and warm up Polar Fest. Since then, Polar Fest has since continued with the pinnacle event being the Polar Fest Plunge into Little Detroit Lake. However, many other activities including golfing on the lake, polar explorer presentations, dances and more have been added. In 2008, fireworks on the last Saturday evening were added, becoming one of the highlights of the week-long winter celebration. Don’t miss one of Minnesota’s most fun winter festivals!

A Floating Music Festival Around Big Detroit Lake: Make the ‘Pub Crawl’ by Boat or Car!

The annual Detroit Lakes Boats & Bars returns on Saturday, August 23, 2025. Boats & Bars is one of Detroit Lakes’ most anticipated summer events, blending lake life, live music, and community spirit. Starting at 10:00 AM at Zorbaz on the Lake, participants travel by boat (or land) to six lakeside venues, each offering live entertainment and one free drink with your event ticket. Proceeds benefit a local charity or community organization, making this a party with a purpose.

Music on the Sandbar starts at 1pm! The Five establishments around the lake also have music. A ticket, which is a contribution to a local charity, will get you one free drink at each of the six establishments. This is a rain or shine event so will have a back-up location if rained out.

This is a rain or shine event, with a backup location planned in case of inclement weather.

Entertainment Schedule & Venues

The event features multiple live bands throughout the day, including a headline performance by Cruize Control Band at Zorbaz at 9:00 PM. Known for their Trop Rock style, Cruize Control blends beachy vibes with classic rock and country influences—perfect for a lakeside party.

2025 Detroit Lakes Young Life Triathlon

The annual Young Life Triathlon launches into the waters of Little Detroit Lake at the City Beach Saturday, August 16, 2025. Hundreds of participants spend the morning swimming, running and biking to the finish line. If you’re looking to get your feet wet, try the sprint course with a 500-meter swim, 20K bike ride and 2.92 mile run. Or look into the stand-up paddleboard and kayak division if you feel swimming-challenged. Make it fun with friends by entering the relay team challenge. Feeling confident? The long course is for you. The 1.5K swim is followed by a 40K bike ride and 10K run. Tired just by reading all of that? Feel free to just cheer on the participants!

This triathlon offers both Sprint and Olympic distances, welcoming athletes of all levels—from seasoned triathletes to first-time participants. The Young Life Triathlon combines athletic challenge with community spirit and charitable purpose. Proceeds support Lakes Area Young Life, a Christian outreach organization dedicated to mentoring and supporting youth in the region.

About Dr. Erika Izaguirre:
Dr. Erika Izaguirre is the Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Director of the Jazz Ensemble at Concordia College. Erika leads an active career as a solo performer, teacher, and clinician. As an international soloist, she maintains a dynamic schedule recently coming off of a tour performing throughout Spain. Erika has commissioned and premiered works in Minnesota, New York, and abroad by composers John Wallace, Jorge Bennett, Dr. Daniel Breedon, and Sean William Calhoun. Recently, she was involved in three consortiums; a solo piece for trumpet and electronics by Dr. Whitney George, an unaccompanied work by Dr. Roy Magnusson to bring awareness to gun violence, and a trumpet sonata by the up-and-coming composer, Marcus Grant. She earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music. Currently, Erika is focused on helping young musicians and composers from underrepresented communities by elevating their voices and providing resources.

Featuring Stephen Sulich as a collaborating artist:
Stephen Sulich is Artist-in-Residence at Concordia College – Hvidsten Hall of Music. He serves as a collaborative pianist for faculty and students, a musical coach, and music preparation for lyric opera studio. He has been a guest conductor, coach, collaborative pianist, and chorus master with the Fargo-Moorhead Opera and guest artist/coach with the music departments at MSUM and NDSU. He graduated from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University and has conducted at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Anchorage Opera, and the Amalfi Coast Music Festival.

Terrance Simien has become one of the most respected and accomplished artists in American roots music today. He and his band mates have performed nearly 10,000 concerts, toured millions of miles to over 45 countries during their eventful career. Their music has been placed in multiple major studio theatre release films, including a Disney animated film, TV shows and radio commercials. They’ve shared studio and stage with legends the Meters, Art Neville, Los Lobos, Marcia Ball, the late Robert Palmer and Dave Matthews Band to name a few. They’ve been cultural ambassadors for their country since the mid 1980’s as part of the U.S,. State Department ongoing cultural diplomacy tours. They performed in Ukraine twice (2012, 2015) with the U.S. Embassy in Kiev and toured Russia for two weeks as well in 2015.

At its deepest roots, zydeco music was traditional and performed acoustic with an accordion, fiddle and triangle and sung in French. The older generation simply called it French music. Before that, it was call and response, jure´songs* of the 19th century using only clapping hands, stomping feet and the yearning, often painful voices of the oppressed French speaking blacks unique to Louisiana. Although jure´ was still being performed in rural Louisiana into the 20th century. One must understand how remote and isolated parts of the rural Deep South were to understand they were often decades behind other parts of the country. When Terrance was just a kid, in the late 60’s he remembers horse and buggies being used as actual means of transportation in rural St. Landry Parish. The Creoles sang their songs through good times and bad, through slavery, Jim Crow and all the way up to the victorious time in 1982 when our friend and Queen Ida Guillory, now 95 won the first Grammy award for zydeco!

Zydeco is driven by African and Caribbean rhythms and has evolved musically over decades incorporating more popular genres like rock, funk, R&B and into the 21st century, incorporated rap and hip hop. Zydeco became wildly popular all over the world when it began to diversify from mostly trad French songs to contemporary sounding music that traveled more easily outside of the French speaking Creole community of Louisiana. During the 20th century Blues, jazz and folk audiences embraced the music and Terrance et al were at the forefront as the emerging face of the music, even performing in notable rock rooms in the US and Canada in the early-mid 80’s.

Kevin Kling: The Love Show will be hitting the Historic Holmes Theatre stage to bring Detroit Lakes lots of laughs on January 23, 2025. When there’s danger all about, that’s when the call goes out: “Here we come to save the day!” And you know that MIGHTY LOVE is on the way! In a world teaming with Jokers, Riddlers, Penguins and Crime Bosses we say, “Enough is Enough!” It’s time to take off the gloves and the scarf and hat.

Once again, we’ve gathered our terrific team of inter-galactic talent, who by day walk among us as mild-mannered Prudence Johnson, Dan Chouinard, Claudia Schmidt, Dane Stauffer, Bradley Greenwald and Simone Perrin, but by night, specifically Valentine’s Day night, unleash their superpowers of Country (POW!), Opera (ZAP!), Folk (SHING!), Poetry (RELATE!) and the Spoken Word (MEZMERIZE!)

The world needs love more than ever. And it starts here, at The O’Shaughnessy, Earth.

About the Talent:

About Kevin Kling

Playwright, actor, author, storyteller and cultural advocate, Kevin Kling is hailed as a Minnesota state treasure.
His work is infused with an innate sense of humor and reflects the life challenges he has surmounted, including a congenital birth disorder and partial paralysis from a near-fatal motorcycle accident.

He has performed his stories and plays in libraries, school gymnasiums, The Kennedy Center, Off-Broadway, regional theaters, and storytelling festivals around the US. His international tours have included Australia, Europe, and Thailand.

He has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, The McKnight Foundation, The Minnesota State Arts Board, The Bush Foundation, and The Jerome Foundation. He is a McDowell Fellow and has received the Whiting Award, the A.P. Anderson Award, the VSA Jeahny, and the Eric Peterson Award. Kevin was named the Minneapolis Story Laureate in 2014.
