The Detroit Lakes Pine to Palm Golf Tournament is one of the largest and most prestigious golf tournaments in the Upper Midwest attracting contestants from more than 35 states. It is the premier golf tournament in the “lakes area” of Northwestern Minnesota. Pine to Palm Golf Tournament and VisitDetroitLakes.com.. \nSince 1931 the Pine to Palm Golf Tournament is held annually the second week of August with 450+ contestants in 5 Divisions (Championship; Mid Am; Seniors; Super Seniors and Numbered Flights.) For the most part\, the tournaments have been held in consecutive weeks\, first the Birchmont\, then the Resorters and then the Pine to Palm. Pat Sawyer\, one of Minnesota’s leading amateur players at the time\, won the Championship in the first two Pine to Palm Tournaments and defeated his brother (Dick) in the 1932 Championship Match. Sawyer bested Edgar Bolstad in the first Pine to Palm final in 1931 and Bolstad is also a familiar golf name in the state. Edgar’s brother (Les Bolstad) was a longtime head men’s golf coach at the University of Minnesota. The Pine to Palm Senior Division was added to the tournament in 1967 and has proven to be an increasingly more popular part of the tourney with each passing year. In 2009 the Mid Am Division was added for those 35 and older to compete within their age group. In 2010 the Super Senior Division provided some of the best competition amongst the 65 and over participants. Though the White Earth Pow Wow is a celebration of the White Earth Reservation’s people and heritage\, everyone is invited. It’s an open event — not just for the native people\, but for everyone. Around 1\,000 dancers and 28 drum groups performed last year\, with similar numbers expected again. \nThe White Earth Pow Wow will officially begin with a blessing of the White Earth Powwow Grounds on Thursday at 11 AM\, followed by a feast at noon; all are are welcome at the feast. \nWhile each day of the White Earth Treaty Celebration & Pow Wow will be filled with events\, the best time for spectators is Saturday. That is the day when there are the most dancers. Between 2\,500 and 3\,000 people are expected to attend. There is no admission fee to enter\, and parking is free as well. A community feast is held both Saturday and Sunday at 5 p.m.\, which is also free of charge. \nThe flag raising will be conducted Saturday and Sunday at 10 am. Grand Entries are Friday at 7 pm\, as well as both Saturday and Sunday at 1 pm and 7 pm. All dancers in full regalia will dance in\, led by the White Earth Color Guard vets who will bring in all of the flags. Meet at the Refuge Visitor Center Parking Lot\, to carpool to sites from there. \nThe pristine woodlands of Tamarac Refuge is host to 25 species of warblers including the Golden-winged Warbler. Nearly 43\,000 acres make up this premier bird refuge of Northwestern Minnesota. We’ll guide you through the mosaic of habitats including pine and hardwood forests\, lakes\, rivers\, marshes and brushy grasslands. You’ll trek into key sections of the refuge for the best views including lake edges where warblers congregate. Sturdy boots or knee high rubber boots are recommended for the short hikes through grassy trails. The refuge has a bird list of 258 species\, so there will be plenty of feathered friends to see here. Meet at the Hamden Slough Refuge Education Building Parking Lot at 5:30 am. \nCome experience the dynamic prairie-wetland-woodland habitats of Hamden Slough NWR! Birders will split into two groups and carpool/caravan to birding spots. All birders will wake up to the Greater Prairie Chickens booming on the refuge lek while Bobolinks call from the grasslands. Time permitting\, we’ll pursue the elusive LeConte’s sparrow in one of the Refuge’s wetter prairies. Make sure you have sturdy waterproof boots for hiking off-trail. Attendees will visit grassland\, wetland and oak savanna sites managed using grazing\, haying\, fire and water level manipulation. Oak savannas are found just south and east of the refuge as the land transitions from prairie to forest. We’ll stop at an oak savanna where we’ve completed a 5-year rotational grazing project to improve habitat for prairie and woodland birds alike. We’ll also venture to an old willow swamp which always produces bird species not common on the prairies like Cape May\, Magnolia and Orange-crowned Warblers\, Baltimore and Orchard Orioles\, Flycatchers\, and more! Birds we’ll be looking for: Greater Prairie Chickens\, Bobolinks\, Western Meadowlarks\, Sandhill Cranes\, Clay Colored and Savanna Sparrows\, Eastern Kingbirds\, Marbled Godwits\, Greater Yellowlegs\, Wilson’s Phalaropes\, Pectoral and Solitary Sandpipers\, Least Sandpipers and a variety of waterfowl and other shorebirds. \nFriday\, May 19\, 5:00 pm-7:00 pm\, 53014 State Hwy 34\, Osage MN 56570: Please join us for an evening buffet at Jack Pines Resort followed by Carrol Henderson’s presentation. Cash bar available. Fee: $37/person. Maps with directions will be provided. \nCarrol and his wife Ethelle have been leading wildlife tours to Latin America since 1987. They have explored countries from Guatemala\, Cuba and Costa Rica south to the southern tip of South America. While much effort has been focused on birds\, Carrol has taken thousands of tropical butterfly and moth photos. His photo collection has been consolidated into his new presentation\, “Pollinators in Paradise: Butterflies and Moths of the American Tropics.” \nThe program includes stunning images of butterflies like the iridescent blue morpho and distinctive “owl butterfly”. Featured butterflies in the American tropics include cracker butterflies\, daggerwings\, skippers\, swallowtails and silk moths. He has incorporated stories of the butterflies including their ecology\, species diversity\, camouflage\, host and nectar plants\, mimicry complexes\, warning colors and “chemical warfare” defenses against bird predation. \nCarrol Henderson was the assistant manager for the Lac qui Parle Wildlife Refuge from 1974-1976 and the DNR Nongame Wildlife Program supervisor from 1977-2018. During that 44-year career he worked on projects for trumpeter swans\, peregrine falcons\, river otters\, common terns\, bald eagles and many other wildlife species. He is the author of 13 books. Since retiring in 2018 he has helped promote “Get the Lead Out” of ammunition and fishing tackle so it does not poison loons\, bald eagles and expose deer hunters and their families to lead bullet fragments in their venison. He serves as conservation chair for the Minnesota Ornithologists’ Union\, is on the Boards of The National Loon Center and The Trumpeter Swan Society. \nSaturday\, May 20\, 5:30 am-Noon: Field trip to Maplewood State Park OR Agassiz Dunes Scientific and Natural Area (SNA). Maple sugaring is an annual tradition at Maplewood. The park is interspersed with numerous small lakes and marshes. The tree-covered hills offer striking vistas of small\, clear lakes and colorful prairies. Hiking opportunities abound with over 20 miles of trails\, some of which will be a few miles of walking on the well-established trails as well as extended hikes on rustic trails. On this trip leaders will highlight how to identify warblers by ear. The spring woodland wildflowers are especially amazing in the park this time of year and we hope to see bloodroot\, trillium\, sharp-lobed hepatica and large-flowered bellwort. There are over 150 bird species known to be breeding in the park. Birds we’ll be looking for: Yellow-throated\, Palm\, Yellow-rumped\, Yellow and Golden-winged Warblers\, Warbling Vireo\, Black-billed Cuckoo\, Ovenbird\, Scarlet Tanager\, Orioles\, Eastern Phoebe\, Great-crested and Least Flycatchers\, Boblolink\, Sparrows including Chipping\, Clay-colored\, Song\, Field and Chipping\, Great Egret\, Green Heron\, Red-shouldered Hawk\, woodpeckers including Pileated\, Sandhill Crane and Indigo Bunting. \nPine to Prairie Pheasants Forever are pleased to support the Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds \nAgassiz Dunes SNA: 40\,000 years ago\, the mighty glacial lake Agassiz pushed vast amounts of sand and gravel along its shores. When the lake receded and the glaciers melted\, they deposited a unique and strange habitat along what is now known as the glacial ridge. This trip will travel along the old shore and sandy dunes where some of the last dry prairies remain and where many unique bird species are found. This apparatus combined Chris’ German Wheel with a set of rollers and winch which allowed for Aloysia’s hoop to be lifted by the rotation of the large wheel. This Trolley device was the inspiration for the development of other machines that would showcase the relationships between the acrobatic and mechanical worlds. \nIn 2004\, these machines became the center piece for a new theatrical work. Chris and Aloysia joined Sandra Feusi\, Rex Camphuis\, Sam Payne\, and Steven Ragatz to work together on the creation of the 30th Anniversary production of the Pickle Family Circus which was produced by the Circus Center of San Francisco. This year end show which would become Birdhouse Factory\, was our first collaborative effort. \nBirdhouse Factory went on to tour for 10 years. In that time it visited over 10 countries on 5 continents. The success of Birdhouse Factory lead us to research and build other innovative man powered apparatus. These devices would become the signature of our touring theatrical shows. Generating content that can fill a large stage and still pack up and travel requires thoughtful planning. This creative problem solving has lead to the creation of devices even more perfectly suited for the event world. \nThis focus on these original contraptions\, in addition to story telling\, and high level acrobatics has remained the heart of what we do. Prior to the band’s formation\, Tim Rushlow and Dwayne O’Brien began playing together in Arlington\, Texas\, in 1984. Porter Howell and Duane Propes got together while they were in high school in 1983 and moved to Nashville to attend Belmont University. Brady Seals and Del Gray played in the backup band of country music singer Josh Logan. Rushlow\, O’Brien\, Propes\, and Howell first started making music at Opryland as a 1950s show band. With both Rushlow’s first wife and Howell’s wife\, plus two other members\, they took the show band on the road\, naming their act “The Varsities”. \nWhen two of the members left to pursue other interests\, they contacted their old friends Gray and Seals\, whom they had met while playing in Springfield\, Massachusetts\, in hopes of forging a more country/Southern rock sound. All six members eventually moved to Nashville\, Tennessee\, where they started playing together. The band played at venues across the United States (around 300 dates a year)\, eventually catching the attention of Nashville’s division of Warner Bros. Records. \nHiatus and status of former members\nDuring the band’s hiatus\, Del Gray co-wrote Trace Adkins’ 2000 single “More”. Former frontman Tim Rushlow signed to Atlantic Records as a solo artist that same year\, releasing a self-titled album. Although it accounted for four singles\, including the No. 8 “She Misses Him”\, Atlantic closed its country music division in 2001. Rushlow then founded a second band\, Rushlow\, whose members included his cousin Doni Harris. Rushlow released two singles and one album (Right Now) on Lyric Street Records\, but disbanded by 2004. Seals founded the band Hot Apple Pie\, which released a self-titled album and three singles in 2005\, while Rushlow and Harris founded the duo Rushlow Harris a year later. In addition\, Howell recorded one album in the band Hilljack\, which also included former solo artist Paul Jefferson. \nReunion: Duane Propes\, Del Gray\, Porter Howell\, and Dwayne O’Brien decided to reunite Little Texas in 2004. When Little Texas reunited\, Rushlow and Huskins made a legal attempt to keep their ex-bandmates from using the Little Texas name. As the other four members felt uncomfortable singing lead vocals in Rushlow’s and Seals’s absence\, they recruited Steven Troy as new lead vocalist. However\, O’Brien was critical of Troy’s performance as lead singer\, stating that it “just didn’t feel authentic”; as a result\, he exited the band in 2006. By the time the band had signed to Montage Music Group in 2007\, producers for the label had suggested that Howell take over on lead vocals instead. Their first Montage Music release was the live album The Very Best of Little Texas: Live and Loud. They promoted this album on the Triple Threat Tour that year\, which included both Restless Heart and Blackhawk; touring guitarist Mark Sutton accompanied the band on both the tour and the live album. This was followed one month later by the studio album Missing Years. This album produced three singles\, although only one — the title track — made the country charts\, peaking at No. 45. Another studio album with Howell on lead vocals\, Young for a Long Time\, followed in 2015. \n2004-present: Little Texas has continued to tour constantly averaging 65 shows a year.
