Polar Fest was started in 1996 by Erika Johnson\, previous owner of Lakeside Tavern. She loved winter and wanted to see some sort of celebration of winter by the lake and outside her restaurant. Coincidentally\, at the same time\, Ron Zeman\, former board member for Develop DL\, heard about people jumping into a hole in the lake to raise money for an organization. He took that idea to the Boys & Girls Club and the “Polar Fest Plunge” was born. Polar Fest continued until 2002 when lack of support left Polar Fest with only its key event — the Polar Plunge\, but no other activities. \nIn 2005\, a group of crazy\, winter-loving citizens came together to reinvigorate and warm up Polar Fest. Since then\, Polar Fest has continued with the pinnacle event being the Polar Fest Plunge into Little Detroit Lake plus many other activities ranging from golfing on the lake to presentations by polar explorers to dances in the sand. In 2008\, fireworks on the last Saturday evening were added and that has become one of the highlights of the week-long winter celebration. \nAbout the Detroit Lakes Breakfast Rotary Club\nThe Detroit Lakes Breakfast Rotary Club is one of the 35\,000 clubs world-wide who are affiliated with Rotary International. Like other Rotary Clubs\, we are dedicated to six areas of focus to build international relationships\, improve lives\, and create a better world to support our peace efforts and end polio forever. We work in the community volunteering with United Way\, local nursing homes\, community events\, ditch cleaning\, and wherever we are needed\, as a club and as individuals as we live “service above self”. \nWe are a group of over 60 members who gather both in person and via Zoom each Tuesday morning at 7 am with programs that are entertaining and informational. It’s a wonderful way to get to know your community and other like-minded service oriented folks. \n\nBest Polar Fest Hotels in Detroit Lakes\, Minnesota\nThe Lodge on Lake Detroit & The Spa Within\nThe only way to improve Polar Fest is staying in one of the best Polar Fest Hotels in Detroit Lakes. Here eastern deciduous hardwoods\, northern coniferous forests and western tallgrass prairie converge – creating a rich assemblage of both plants and animals.  Though the landscape has been altered by the influences of human history and past management\, the refuge remains largely intact with a functioning ecosystem and retains an untamed character for current visitors to enjoy\, use and respect. From the vibrant emergence of spring woodland wildflowers to the rich colors of autumn to the quiet hush of winter\, people come to revitalize their spirit and connect with a rich wildlife heritage. \nThe refuge is home to a large population of nesting trumpeter swans. Habitat conservation efforts address species such as the nearly threatened golden-winged warbler\, woodcock\, and ring-necked ducks. You’ll find Minnesota state icons including the common loon\, showy lady’s slipper\, red pine tree\, morel mushrooms\, wild rice and walleye. Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge website. \nAbout The Friends of Tamarac\nEstablished nearly 30 years ago this nonprofit group is made up of an active 10-15 member board and over 300 members. The Friends sponsor educational programs and events\, build observation platforms and pathways\, generate thousands of grant dollars for water quality and habitat projects\, host a popular nature photography contest\, and so much more. We are an advocate for wildlife refuges and passionate about protecting wild places for generations. The volunteers of Tamarac donated over 8\,000 hours of service just last year. Dick Beardsley is a compelling motivational and inspirational keynote speaker at Fortune 500 companies\, non-profit organizations\, conferences\, conventions\, corporate events\, fundraisers\, galas\, sporting events\, prisons\, schools\, and drug treatment centers. \nRead MoreDick is referred to as a running legend in the United States and is best known for his incredible race in the 1982 Boston Marathon. On a very hot day\, that race was dubbed the “Duel in the Sun” as he battled world recorder holder Alberto Salazar down to the finish line. Both broke the American record: Salazar won a record time of 2:08:51; Beardsley’s time was 2:08:53\, finishing 1.6 seconds later\, placing second. He was at the height of his professional running career. \nIn November 1989\, tragedy struck Dick’s life. While using an auger to lift corn into a bin on his Minnesota farm\, Dick became entangled in the machine as it literally began to tear him apart. Not expected to live or walk–much less ever run again–he managed to survive. \nBut that was just the first of a series of events that would forever change his life. During the next few years\, Dick was involved in a severe car accident. Later he was hit by a truck while running and later still\, rolled his vehicle in a snowstorm. Finally\, while hiking one day\, the ground gave out beneath him and he fell off a cliff. Each time he ended up in the hospital and had multiple surgeries to try and put him back together. \nDue to the large amount of pain medication he was taking\, he became addicted–and that’s when his life really started to spiral out of control. It has been a long an difficult road back\, but Dick has been celebrating every day of his sobriety since February 12\, 1997.Dick Beardsley Marathon Gallery\nPhoto Credit Dick Beardsley Races.\nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Dick Beardsley Marathon in Detroit Lakes\, Minnesota in September! \nTags: Dick Beardsley Run\, Dick Beardsley Rrace\, Dick Beardsley Marathon\, Beardsley Run\, Detroit Half Marathon\, Detroit Lakes 5k\, Detroit Lakes triathlon\, Detroit Lakes Annual Events\, Detroit Lakes Activities\, Detroit Lakes Things to Do \n\nBest Hotels in Detroit Lakes\, Minnesota\nThe Lodge on Lake Detroit & The Spa Within\nBest Western Premier The Lodge On Lake Detroit\, a Lifestyle Lakefront Minnesota Hotel\, offers a great location and numerous amenities that make us the premier lakefront lodging destination for Historic Holmes Theatre attendees. In fact\, the Water Carnival is one of the longest running festivals in the state of Minnesota. It has become one of the biggest summer events in the lakes area\, and includes a wide range of activities for the whole family. The first Water Carnival was held in 1935. It took several years to become established\, and was even cancelled in 1937. However\, it has been held every year since then. In its current format\, it includes dozens of events such as the Miss Northwest Pageant at the Historical Holmes Theater\, and concludes with everyone’s favorite: The Parade of the Northwest.
