2021 Polar Fest Poles N Holes Fishing Derby

Join us at the 11th Annual Poles N Holes Fishing Derby on February 13, 2021 at Little Lake Detroit in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.  With the temperatures expected to dip to dangerously low levels on Saturday, February 6th (the originally scheduled date), the Poles N Holes Fishing Derby Committee has opted to postpone the Live Derby until February 13. The Poles N Holes Fishing Derby helps kick off the annual Detroit Lakes Polar Fest winter event Polar Fest. Detroit Lakes Breakfast Rotary hosts the annual Poles N Holes Fishing Derby each February (first Saturday of Detroit Lakes Polar Fest) offering thousands of dollars in prizes and providing fun for the whole family! This derby has raised nearly $200,000 in funds to support area literacy, youth sports, senior citizens programs and community projects.

During the winter, ice fishing reigns as one of the most popular Minnesotan winter activities. And although some may fish alone and find peace and solitude whilst reeling in nice walleyes, ice fishing lends itself to friend and family bonding time. Rent a fish house in Detroit Lakes to pursue walleye, northern, bass or crappies. Contact the Chamber of Commerce office at 218-847-9202 for ice fish house rentals.

Virtual Derby Option February 12-14
If you can’t make the ‘live’ derby, you still have the virtual derby option available—which runs from February 12-14 through the Fish Donkey app—a free download from your app store. It’s a great way to participate in the Poles n Holes Derby from the comfort of your own fish house and lake. Note that all Minnesota lakes are eligible fishing locations.

After all we’ve been through with the pandemic, it’s disappointing to have to postpone the derby. But we remain committed to providing the community and area with a fun and safe outdoor activity. So we look forward to gathering with you all NEXT weekend for a great day of fishing and fun!

Frequently Asked Questions:

No, just show up next weekend and report to the registration area near the public access to pick up your registration packet.
Of course we’d appreciate your contribution to our club—really! But if you want a refund, you can certainly request one by emailing us at icefishingdl@gmail.com. Please be patient—our registration people have a lot to sort out!
We will see. We will not be taking a waiting list at this time. Our best suggestion would be to keep checking the website to see if sales reopen. Remember our attendance is still limited by pandemic restrictions.
Yes you can. If you’d rather fish from your own house on your favorite lake—that’s still the safest way to fish in comfort and just participate in the virtual derby. But here’s the deal—you can in essence “double down” and enter fish that you catch on Saturday at the live derby via the Fish Donkey app (assuming you’ve paid your entry fee, of course) and then bring it to our fish entry station on the ice. Fun, right?
Our raffle permit has been extended by the state. So our drawing will occur on the ice at 3 pm on Saturday the 13th. Tickets can be purchased on the ice as well as in advance from local Rotarians, Quality Bait and Tackle, Lakes Sport Shop, County 6 Gas and Bait, Northshore Gas and Bait and Lakeland General Store.
ot really. You still need to pick up your registration in the public access area, you still need to maintain Covid-19 protocols, you still need to read and follow the rules—and every ticket will still be for 2 holes. (10 feet apart!) We do believe we will have some food and beverage service out there for you—so that’s some good news! Remember—no glass on the ice.
While we do expect (and pray) that the temperatures will be warmer next week—it’s not going to be balmy by any means. If you want to tip your sled up or use a single wall windbreak—that’s fine. But we still want to maintain the integrity of the derby and enclosed houses are not allowed.
