About the Talent:

Excelsior! Trio

Due to their unique instrumentation, Harris, Hershberger and Peterson have excellent chemistry as an ensemble; they are incredibly talented at their instruments. It’s obvious from the start that they are great friends and have a lot of fun playing together.

Because the combination of flute, saxophone and piano is a rather unusual instrument grouping, there isn’t a lot of repertoire out there composed specifically for this ensemble. Luckily, Peterson is also a composer, so he has been writing music for the group. They first discovered how much they enjoyed collaborating back in 2009; all three musicians are on the music faculty at Concordia College-Moorhead, and after performing a piece together that Peterson had composed at a recital, they decided to form Excelsior! Since then they have performed all over the United States, and even internationally in Italy and Scotland. Their repertoire is far more varied than just Peterson’s compositions, featuring also his arrangements of classical composers like Debussy to jazz standards like Chick Corea’s Spain. Peterson himself draws compositional inspiration from a variety of areas.

Every member of the Trio knew they wanted to become musicians at a very young age. “Music chose me,” said Harris succinctly, whilst Hershberger was inspired as kindergartner attending his first orchestra concert with his dad. “There was no question for me while growing up,” said Peterson, adding that he “just needed to figure out how to get paid to play music.”

Sonja Bosca-Harasim, Principal Violinist FMSO

Dr. Harasim is Assistant Professor of Violin and Viola at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, where she is Co-Founder and Director of the Concordia String Preparatory Program and serves as String Area Coordinator. Additionally, she maintains an active performing career locally, nationally, and internationally as a solo, chamber, and orchestral musician. Harasim currently serves as Concertmaster of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony and collaborates frequently in chamber music projects with her colleagues and students.

A native of Houston, Texas, Harasim began her violin studies at the age of 5 in the Suzuki program at Parker Elementary with Karen Somer, Kathy Karpicke, and Rosemary Jodeit and went on to study with Albert Muenzer while attending the critically acclaimed High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. She completed her undergraduate studies with David Updegraff at the Cleveland Institute of Music and returned to her hometown to pursue her graduate studies with Kenneth Goldsmith and doctoral studies with Cho-Liang Lin at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. Harasim plays a violin made in 2011 by Mario Miralles, modeled after Mr. Lin’s “Titian” Stradivarius.

About the Talent:

David Ferreira

Dr. David Ferreira currently enjoys teaching jazz piano and the vocal jazz ensembles at both Concordia College and Minnesota State University Moorhead in addition to leading his own professional jazz trio. He pursued his Bachelor of Music degree at Illinois Wesleyan, has done graduate work at Union Theological Seminary’s School of Sacred Music in New York City and received his master’s and doctoral degrees from the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. Dr. Ferreira is a performing singer, conductor, published composer-arranger and jazz pianist. He performed with the Fargo/Moorhead Jazz Arts Group ensembles for 17 years, and directs the Cathedral Choir at First Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND.

Russell Peterson

An accomplished classical/jazz saxophonist, bassoonist and composer, Russell Peterson holds degrees from Youngstown State University (Ohio), Le Conservatoire de Bordeaux (France), and Bowling Green State University (Ohio), where he studied with Dr. James Umble, Donald Byo, Jean-Marie Londeix, Dr. Jeffery Lyman and Dr. John Sampen. Winner of numerous prizes, including the top prize at the International Geneva Saxophone Concours, (Switzerland), and first place winner of the MTNA National Music Competition, Mr. Peterson has soloed with orchestras in the United States as well as Europe, including the Dana Chamber Orchestra, (USA), Concordia Orchestra, (USA), Bowling Green Philharmonic, (USA), L’Orchestra de la Suisse Romande, (Switzerland), Collegium Musicum, Basel (Switzerland), The Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra, The Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra (USA), The Orchestra Conservatorio Superior De M?sica (Spain), The Western New York Chamber Orchestra (USA), and The St. Petersburg Philharmonic, (Russia).

Mr. Peterson is an active chamber musician, performing extensively throughout Europe and The United States with The Transcontinental Saxophone Quartet, and is currently also performing with the Hard-Bop Jazz Saxophone Quartet in Fargo-Moorhead. The Hard-Bop Quartet’s first CD release “DON’T STEP ON YOUR NECK”, is available on Sea-Breeze records and the TSQ’s debut CD “MOUNTAIN ROADS” is available on Albany Records. Russell’s first solo CD “AMERICAN BREATH” is on Barking Dog Records and features the music of David Maslanka, Larry Bell and Peterson. Russell released “Russ Peterson and Friends, Jazz/Rock Saxophone” in Jan of 2010. As an Orchestral player, Russell has served as bassoonist with several symphony orchestras, and is currently principal bassoonist with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony, as well as bassoonist with t he Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Wind Quintet.

Mr. Peterson has performed with some of the most notable artist in the business: Phil Woods, Manhattan Transfer, Dave Weckle, Peter Erskin, Henry Mancini, Gregg Bissonette, Ray Charles, Wayne Newton, Bill Watrous, Gregg Field, Frankie Valie and the 4 Seasons, Maureen McGovern, Samuel Sanders, The Eroica Trio, Will Kennedy, Frankie Avalon, Tommy Igoe, Nick Brignola, Zoro, Ignacio Berroa, Terri Lyne Carrington, the Four Tops. Mr. Peterson has served on the faculty at Youngstown State University (Ohio), The University of Toledo (Ohio), Minnesota State University Moorhead, The Interlochen Summer Arts Camp (Michigan), The International Music Camp, and is currently instructor of Saxophone, Bassoon ,and Jazz ensemble Iat Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota.

Jeremy Brekke

Dr. Jeremy Brekke was appointed Associate Professor of Trumpet at North Dakota State University in 2008. He teaches trumpet, high brass methods, various brass chamber groups, jazz lab band, and jazz combo. Previously, he was the Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Loyola University in New Orleans from 2002-2008. He received a Doctorate of Arts in Trumpet Performance and Pedagogy and a M.M. in trumpet performance from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO, where he studied with William Pfund and performed with the award winning Jazz Lab Band I.

Dr. Brekke has a very diverse performance background and has experience playing in a wide range of styles. His orchestral experience includes the Centennial Philharmonic in Denver, Grand Forks Symphony, Greeley Philharmonic, Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra, Central City Opera, and the Louisiana Philharmonic. He has performed on the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, Boulder Dinner Theatre, Tulane Summer Lyric Theatre, and various big bands including the John Mahoney Big Band and the Jazz Arts Group of Fargo/Moorhead. He was the winner of the Rocky Mountain Concerto Competition in 2001, and has been the featured soloist with the Centennial Philharmonic, International Music Camp Orchestra, University of Northern Colorado Orchestra, Loyola Orchestra and Band, The John Philip Sousa Honor Band, New Orleans Civic Symphony, Northern Ambassadors Concert Band, and the NDSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble.
