Formed in the spring of the year 2000 to support lead singer/bass player Jeff Engholm’s first solo CD (Summit Climb), CU performed around central Minnesota as a jam band. A couple of years of Wednesday nights at the Red Carpet Nightclub in St. Cloud, MN firmly established the band’s repertoire, and musicianship, and kept audiences dancing.

During that time they recorded and released a couple of albums of their original material: Collective Unconscious, and The Garden.

A few years later they began performing the Beatles Abbey Road album in its entirety, from Come Together all the way through Her Majesty (years before tribute bands were a thing). From there they expanded on to Simon & Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water album (with strings and brass), CSNY’s Deja Vu album, The Band’s The Last Waltz (with a cavalcade of guest performers), and the epically grand album from The Beach Boys Pet Sounds (with a multitude of multi-instrumentalists playing over 30 different instruments).

The Fabulous Armadillos

Originally formed to perform multi-instrumentalist Jeff Engholm’s solo album, Summit Climb in the year 2000, Collective Unconscious has grown from those humble roots to become one of Minnesota’s premiere groups. Singer/songwriters Nathan “Nature” Nesje, and Muggsy Lauer make up the core of the group with their slick, well blended vocal harmonies. They are joined by composer/keyboardist George Maurer.

Through the years, the band has performed not only their own music, but expanded into a new genre: album shows. Starting in 2005 with performing The Beatles “Abbey Road” from first track to last (Come Together to Her Majesty), with special guest and semi-band member, Stacy Bauer, they jumped into one of their most ambitious projects, The Beach Boys “Pet Sounds”. That album took an ensemble of over 15 musicians playing an astounding array of instruments from Theramin to timpani, and included The Vees and The Half Steps. Other album projects have included Simon & Garfunkel “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young “Deja Vu”, and The Band “The Last Waltz”.

If that wasn’t enough, the group teamed up with The Fabulous Armadillos in 2010 to create a veritable “super group” and have been performing “Takin’ It To The Limit: A Tribute To Eagles”, and “Takin’ It To The Streets: A Tribute To The Doobie Brothers” ever since. And if even that wasn’t enough, members of Collective Unconscious have taken part in groups paying tribute to Zed Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney and Wings, The Guess Who, The Traveling Wilburys, George Harrison, The Blues Brothers, and John Lennon, as well as performing in plays, pit bands, jazz ensembles, jug bands, and this thing we do each February.

Winner of Broadway World’s 2021 Best Streamed Concert, The Songbook Live Series, The Hollywood Songbook is the brainchild of Broadway veteran and former Producing Artistic Director of the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, James A. Rocco, Songbook Live! is an anthology series. Each edition delves into distinct time periods and influences on popular music. Rocco calls the show more than a concert and says, “I tend to agree with the critics that have called the series edutainment. It’s a comfortable atmosphere with lots of laughs and knockout performances by some of the Twin Cities’ best musical artists. On top of that, you’ll hear the stories behind the songs we all love,” such as Over The Rainbow, This Is Me from The Greatest Showman, and more.

James A. Rocco, Songbook Live

JAMES A. ROCCO is the co-founder of Thirty Saints Productions, creators of Broadway Songbook®. Together with Broadway Asia, Thirty Saints toured Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat® to Tokyo and led the artistic team for the US Air Force’s 9/11 tribute video; There Are No Words, seen by millions of viewers. Thirty Saints is an investor in the current Broadway, National Tour, and Toronto productions of Come from Away and Magic Mike in London. In 2019, he was recognized by The Broadway League and The Coalition of Broadway Unions and Guilds for “30 years of dedication, craft, and contribution to the theater” at their annual Broadway Salutes ceremony.

Currently a member of NAMT (National Alliance for Musical Theatre), he serves on the Alliance’s New Works committee. Rocco commissioned the holiday musical A Country Christmas Carol and was part of the creative teams behind the off-Broadway cult hits Nite Club Confidential and Streakin’! His re-versioned stage production of Singin’ in the Rain has been seen around the world. Before joining the Ordway team, Rocco was Producing Artistic Director of Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma and Interim Artistic Director of Stage One, a theatre dedicated to new musical development.

James directed and produced his first show in New York at 16 (Henry, Sweet Henry, at the Mercer Arts Center and the Lamb Theatre). As a performer, he appeared in the original Broadway production of Cats (as the Rum Tum Tugger), the International and TV Ashai Productions of Duke Ellington’s Sophisticated Ladies; sang back up for Frank Sinatra and was featured singer for Herbie Hancock and the Super Sounds. He played Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar, The Witch in Into The Woods appears on 10 Ben Bagley albums, and his CD, It’s Between Us, produced the FMQB Top 40 hit, And The Night Stood Still by Diane Warren. In 2021 Broadway World Minneapolis cited him as Vocalist of the Decade.

His freelance work as a director/choreographer includes award-winning productions of 33 Variations (Broadway World, Best Regional Production of the Decade), Grey Gardens, Yankee Doodle Dandy (World Premiere), Sweeney Todd, The Wizard of Oz (with Roseanne, Eartha Kitt, and Mickey Rooney), Chess, She Loves Me, Violet, South Pacific, White Christmas, As Bees in Honey Drown, A Little Night Music, Songs For A New World, Damn Yankees, Pirates of Penzance, Guys & Dolls, On the Town, A Christmas Story, Annie, Jesus Christ Superstar and more.

John Berry

Singer-songwriter John Berry rose to stardom on the country charts of the 1990s with such mega hits as Your Love Amazes Me, Standing on the Edge of Goodbye and She’s Taken a Shine. His annual Christmas tours brighten the holidays for thousands, as does his electrifying rendition of O’ Holy Night.

During his star-making decade, John placed 20 singles on the county charts, 6 of which went Top 5, with Your Love Amazes Me, scoring a #1 on the Billboard and Radio & Records Country Chart as well as Standing on the Edge of Goodbye and She’s Taken a Shine earning the #1 slot in Radio & Records . He has earned multiple Gold and Platinum records over the years. John was nominated for the ACM Top New Male Vocalist in 1994, won a Grammy Award in 1996 for his participation in Amazing Grace: A Country Salute to Gospel Vol. 1, was nominated for another Grammy in 1995 for his smash hit Your Love Amazes Me and was nominated for the CMA Horizon Award and Top Male Vocalist Award in 1995. In 1997 he was nominated for Vocal Event of the Year (for Long Haired Country Boy with Charlie Daniels and Hal Ketchum) and in 2013 John was nominated for the Mainstream Country Male Artist by the ICM Awards. And thanks to the miracles of modern technology, he even sang a duet with the late, great Patsy Cline.

“I love what I do, with a passion not seen in quite some time. I’m hopeful and excited about the future. I love singing and always will. I have a bus, an incredible stage presentation, a great band, hands-on management team and I’m always all dressed up and ready to go.”

He and his family moved back to Music City after several years in Georgia, and in 2019 John is pursuing a touring and personal appearance schedule that is more active than ever. Given his wide range of music and number of releases, John is fortunate in that he can book a solo show with just himself and guitar, a small-band acoustic show or a full-band engagement and has more than enough hit material to captivate a crowd and deliver an evening full of musical memories.

Between 1979 and 1990 he recorded and marketed six albums on his own labels. The Graduation Song, which he wrote during his senior year in high school, became a perennial favorite at graduation ceremonies. It appeared on two of his early collections.

Those early discs and John’s strong regional popularity attracted attention on Music Row. Capitol Records signed him to his first major label contract in 1992. Berry’s co-written hits A Mind of Her Own and Kiss Me in the Car introduced him to radio audiences in 1993. Then Your Love Amazes Me, What’s in it for Me and You and Only You thrust him to stardom in 1994. Standing on the Edge of Goodbye, I Think About it all the Time, and If I Had Any Pride Left at All were all major hits the following year, with Standing on the Edge of Goodbye earning John the coveted 1995 Grammy nomination.

But it was his stunning performance of the title track of the 1995 CD O’ Holy Night that led to his most enduring legacy to date. John began doing special Christmas tours that year and 2016 marks his 20th anniversary holiday concert tour. He has big plans to celebrate and involve the fans like never before for this anniversary celebration. He has also issued three more Christmas-music collections. If O’ Holy Night is all that anyone remembers of me, that’s fine with me,” he comments about his perennial Christmas popularity. “It is a truly inspired piece of music.”

Wings Over America is primarily composed of members of the Collective Unconscious, a St Cloud band who brought you the Beatles “Abbey Road”, the Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds”, Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, CSNY’s “Deja Vu” and The Band’s “The Last Waltz”. You may have also seen them teamed up with the Fabulous Armadillos performing “Takin It To The Limit: A Tribute to the Music of the Eagles” and “A Doobie Brothers Tribute”. Every single one of these musicians is a professional in their own right, with an impressive array of music making with a “who’s who” in Minnesota Music. These nine musicians from the St Cloud Area have been making music together for 20 years in one form or another.

Wings Over America: A Tribute to Paul McCartney and Wings is based primarily on Wings 1976 live album “Wings Over America” with a few subtractions and additions. The album reached number one on the Billboard Charts in 1977 and was the fifth Wings album in a row to achieve that status. After the Beatles and a few solo Paul McCartney records, Wings (often referred to as “Paul McCartney and Wings” was formed in 1971 with his wife Linda, and Moody Blues’ guitarist Denny Laine. Several Beatles tunes (I’ve Just Seen a Face, Blackbird, Yesterday, The Long and Winding Road) are included in the set, along with some Moody Blues (Go Now) and McCartney solo tunes (Bluebird, Uncle Albert). The show becomes a great retrospective of McCartney’s career, and is a celebration of one of the most celebrated careers in the history of pop and rock music.

Collective Unconscious presents Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” in its entirety. They drop the needle on S&G’s last record as a duo. Complete with Strings and Horns, it’s a true sonic representation of the original arrangements, down to the last meticulous detail.

Bridge Over Troubled Water generates a unique set of feelings in us. The lyrics are so visual that taking the album down and placing it on the record player (the only real way to listen to BOTW) is like paging through a childhood photo album long lost. The record is simultaneously somber and joyous, deep and light. It’s only now, looking back across some 50 years that we get a sense of the placeholder in time that was BOTW. Released as it was in 1970, BOTW truly served as a marker between the decades, a nod to the ideals and folksy simplicity of the sixties mixed with the global complexities and inward thinking that was to dominate the decade to come. BOTW was a balm in a confusing time and remains so today.
